Dr. Sammy Cheng 

a Registered Clinical Psychologist, Division of Clinical Psychology, the HKPS, and a member both in Divisions of Clinical Psychology of the British Psychological Society and of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Cheng obtained his master's degree in clinical psychology at HKU, and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at CUHK. He had worked as a clinical psychologist in various hospitals and specialist outpatient clinics under the Hospital Authority. He has rich experiences in providing CBT to patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) for 30 years. Dr. Cheng has served as an Honorary Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, HKU and Honorary Clinical Supervisor of both the Departments of Psychology of the HKU and CUHK for many years, offering clinical supervision for clinical psychology trainees. He always emphasizes the importance of evidence-based psychological treatment and research. He has been active in participating in clinical research and published numerous articles in the international journals of psychology and medicine. His research interests include CBT, insomnia, depression, anxiety, ADHD, pain management, addiction behaviors, and PTSD. His Chinese publications include books titled “Addictive Behaviors and Treatment”, “Self-help Insomnia'' and the university textbooks.

 Brief content:

Course Content - Part 1

  • Symptoms, prevalence, diagnostic criteria, and impact of OCD
  • Categories of OCD and specific themes
  • Psychological theories and formulations of OCD
  • Empirical effectiveness of psychological treatments for OCD
  • Methods for assessing OCD and suitable treatment plans
  • Tips for patients to accept treatment and manage avoidance
  • Assessment and intervention methods in cognitive therapy
  • Different forms of exposure and response prevention

Course Content - Part 2

  • Section 1: Understand symptoms, diagnosis, and impact of OCD
  • Section 2: Identify and decide on elements for exposure
  • Section 3: Establish a gradual exposure hierarchy and SUD & plan
  • Section 4: ERP – imagined fear situations
  • Section 5: ERP – in vivo or real-life situations
  • Section 6: Continued exposure and response prevention
  • Section 7: Recognize/ address obsessive thoughts - changing
    response patterns
  • Section 8: Recognize/ address obsessive thoughts - mindfulness
    interventions
  • Section 9: Preventing relapse

A treatment manual will be provided.
